OG's pick — 5 stars, feels like your fave song
genre: romance, novella
tropes: slow burn, soulmates, found family energy
vibes: feel good, good friend group, therapy is a thing, Blackity Black, good banter
who this is for: if you love Black romance with actual culture in it. this one is for the overthinkers, the ones who build entire scenarios in their head before clarifying. if you grew up on Girlfriends and want that energy in book form, start here.
OG's personal synopsis
Desi is tall, brown, Dominican from the Bronx AND he wears a grill. Solene is Haitian, mahogany skin, Brooklyn bred. two people with roots, rhythm, and a whole lot of energy between them.
what starts as a day of flirting and real city adventure turns into a night worth reading slowly. Olive Winter writes scenes where you can see and feel the kompa even with your eyes closed. the locations are real, the culture is real, and the tension is absolutely real. she also drops recipes in this book and I loved that detail more than I expected to.
the friend group carries this story just as much as the love story does. Naomi in particular is the kind of friend everyone needs: she will call you out on your dumb decisions and love you through them in the same breath.
the ending has full romcom energy and I mean that as a compliment.
